MESSA ABC PLAN

We're here to help.

MESSA ABC is a high-deductible health plan that saves you money through lower premiums. MESSA ABC is also compatible with a tax-saving health savings account (HSA).

Learning how to manage a large deductible can be challenging at first. There is a learning curve. You have to budget each year for the deductible. Putting money tax-free into your HSA to pay medical expenses provides many financial benefits, even into retirement.

MESSA ABC MEDICAL PLAN INFORMATION

Six smart strategies to stretch your dollars with MESSA ABC

1. Stay in-network. MESSA ABC features the largest provider and hospital networks in the state. You save on deductible expenses when paying for in-network services because in-network doctors, hospitals and pharmacies have agreed to cap the amount charged to you. This is the same amount the provider has agreed to accept as payment in full from MESSA/Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.

2. Get free physicals, immunizations and cancer screenings every year. MESSA ABC covers preventive care services for free when you use in-network providers: there's no deductible charge or copayment, ever. Free preventive services include annual physicals, cancer screenings, well-baby visits, flu shots, and child and adult immunizations. Preventive care is the key to catching health problems before they become serious and to reducing your health care costs over the long term.

3. Utilize free preventive prescriptions. MESSA ABC includes free coverage of hundreds of preventive prescriptions, including contraceptives, prenatal vitamins, weight loss drugs, and medications to treat high cholesterol, high blood pressure and alcohol dependence, smoking cessation and more.  There's no copayment or deductible charge for prescriptions on the preventive prescription coverage list.

4. Use your HSA to save on taxes three ways. MESSA ABC meets IRS rules and can be offered in tandem with a health savings account (HSA). You and your employer can contribute to your HSA tax-free. Interest and investment earnings grow tax-free. Withdrawals from your HSA to pay IRS-qualified medical expenses are also not taxed.

5. Contribute pre-tax dollars to your HSA. Pre-tax contributions to your HSA help you stretch your dollars and boost your take-home pay. For example, the typical middle class family pays about 20 percent federal income tax. This means that for each $100 in pre-tax salary you put away in your HSA, you save about $20 in federal taxes, more than $4 in state taxes and $7.10 on FICA and Medicare. So your $100 is worth 30 percent more instantly. And an HSA can help you build a long-term financial safety net to give you added peace of mind. Put $50 a paycheck into your HSA, and after eight years at 3 percent interest you'll have built up almost $12,000 to pay deductible expenses and medical bills. After 30 years, you'll have accumulated more than $63,000.

6. Take advantage of our free HSA with online tools from HealthEquity ® . A HealthEquity HSA account is included at no charge for each MESSA ABC member. MESSA will enroll you with HealthEquity when you enroll in MESSA ABC. HealthEquity provides online tools to help you manage your HSA. There's no monthly fee for MESSA ABC members.

MESSA ABC is an exceptional, high-quality health plan that costs less – 10% to 25% less – and gives members the same great financial security, peace of mind and personalized service that are at the heart of every MESSA plan. DENTAL COVERAGE – DELTA DENTAL

Since 1968, MESSA has offered dental coverage to supplement its health plans. Because good dental care is an essential component to a person's overall health, MESSA dental plans fill an important need. MESSA's dental plans are underwritten and administered by Delta Dental of Michigan, a non-profit dental care corporation known for its high-quality dental programs.

Delta Dental contracts with dentists throughout Michigan to provide high-quality care at a reasonable cost. More than 90 percent of Michigan dentists participate with Delta Dental. When you seek services from a dentist who participates with Delta Dental, the dentist will bill Delta Dental directly and your out-of-pocket costs will be limited to the deductible and co-payment for covered charges as specified in your plan. If you choose to see a non-participating dentist, you may have higher out-of-pocket costs and the dentist may not bill Delta Dental directly. MESSA ABC Rx Coverage: $2 Generics List

MESSA ABC plans cover hundreds of free preventive prescriptions at no charge to the member — no copayment and no deductible.

Additionally, MESSA ABC plans cover more than 20 generic drugs with a copayment of just $2 once the plan deductible is met. That means members pay the full cost of the prescription until they satisfy their in-network deductible. Once a member satisfies the in-network deductible, additional out-of-pocket costs are limited to prescription drug copayments (MESSA ABC Plans 1 & 2) or prescription copayments and 10% coinsurance on in-network medical services (MESSA ABC Plan 3). With all three plans, if you reach the in-network out-of-pocket cap, your prescriptions and all in-network medical services, including office visits and hospital charges, are fully covered at 100% by your MESSA ABC health plan for the remainder of the calendar year.

MESSA Saver Rx and MESSA ABC Rx: $10 copayment for over-the-counter medications

A $10 copayment is available for up to a 34-day supply of certain over-the-counter (OTC) medications used to treat heartburn and seasonal allergies. A prescription for the OTC drug is required and must be presented and filled at the pharmacy counter in order to be covered. The member pays only the $10 copayment and the pharmacy will bill the remaining costs to their health plan.
