Canine Renal Support Raw Diet
Feeding Raw to Dogs with Renal Problems
- Common Conditions
One of the most questions asked to the customer service team is: can I feed my dog on raw when they have renal (aka kidney) problems? Happily, the answer is yes! In this article we discuss renal problems, how they can arise and how diet can help.
It is one of the best things you can do for your dog if they suffer from renal problems, Not only can you improve their quality of life you are also doing your furry baby a good deed.
Explanation of the Kidney
The kidney is one of the key organs of the body. The kidneys perform many crucial functions, including:
- maintaining overall fluid balance,
- regulating and filtering minerals from blood,
- filtering waste materials from food, medications, and toxic substances,
- creating hormones that help produce red blood cells, promote bone health, and regulate blood pressure
It is a crucial factor in your dog's health. In humans, kidney or renal problems lead to patients having dialysis. In dogs, this is rarely if ever offered. It is expensive and dogs don't want to sit still!
The kidney is composed of a number of different elements: nephrons, the renal corpuscle, renal tubules, the renal medulla and the renal pelvis. It is relatively small compared to the liver, but extremely complex.

Raw Diet & Kidney
When choosing your raw diet we suggest to keep to the poultry and fish options as the poultry is easier on the digestive system, and is also low in phosphorus. You can also add Salmon oil to these to keep up the Omega-3 intake.
When feeding a dog raw you are giving them a high quality of protein which is gentler on their system as they can absorb this much better and raw is moister which will keep their uptake of fluids going in the right direction.

Please advice me on the best plan of action for this problem, as Kerry has just been diagnosed and I'm looking at the best options for her as she almost 16… that's not overly expensive as vets drugs are? Thank you for your help.
ReplyHelen xx
We would suggest starting her on the poultry and fish options. She will still need regular vet monitoring to manage her condition. You can order a 4kg trial pack to start with to see how she gets on with it and then take it from there x
ReplyHi Helen – due to Kerry's age and medical condition, we would recommend discussing any diet changes with your vet, but the feedback from a holistic vet who we work closely with is that over the past 20 years he has seen dogs with kidney disease thrive on a raw diet so it would be worth considering changing her over – with the support of your vet, or better still a holistic vet. You can also ask your vet about pro-nephra which is really good at both binding phosphorus and supporting kidney recovery x
ReplyI recently contacted Bella and Duke (only in May 2020) and was advised that you did not hold food suitable for my dog who has Chronic Kidney Disease yet I have come across this article stating your products are suitable – rather confusing. Can you advise on the phosphorus levels of the poultry and fish options as this is quite an important factor with dogs with renal problems. I thank you in advance for your time in replying.
ReplyHi Susan – we have taken advice on this from a Holistic Vet, who we work closely with – so his feedback was: (and this isn't medical advice more experienced reassurance !)
ReplyOver the last 20 years seen dogs with kidney issues thrive on raw
Why ? The phosphorous when it is delivered naturally in food behaves totally differently to when it is added in a powdered supplement in dried food
Totally different creatures
If you want to be super safe you can ask your vet , or better still a Holsitic Vet about a product called Pro Nephra which is really good at binding to phosphorous and supporting kidney recovery x
